Home automation is no longer a thing of science fiction. The ability to have many of the common functions of a home operated by a central computer has become commonplace in many of today’s modern homes. Lights, environmental controls, and even security systems can all be programmed to operate automatically, according to the needs of the residing there. Many homes today are being built with these systems as standard equipment, but they can also be retro-fitted to older homes as well.

Aside from the obvious convenience, automation has many practical applications as well. One of the most commonly cited reasons for installing an automation system is conservation. The cost of energy has been consistently on the rise for many years now, and as a result homeowners across the country are looking for ways in which they can help keep these costs at a minimum. An automated system is ideally suited to this purpose, as it can help regulate the amount of power that a home uses on a daily basis.

Lights are one of the most popular applications for home automation. They are an important aspect of a properly functioning home but they can also be a drain on energy if used excessively. Fortunately, lights can be easily controlled automatically through the use of computers. A properly configured system can adjust the amount of artificial light within a home according to the amount of natural light that is available. During daylight hours, these systems minimize the number of lights in the home that are turned on, and each room can have individual settings. Conversely, once the sun has gone down these same systems can be programmed to bring up the home’s internal lighting to appropriate levels.

Motion detectors can also play an important role in the automated lighting operations of a home. They are often used to replace the function of a light switch, in that they can be programmed to automatically turn on the lights whenever someone walks into the room. And of course, they can also be programmed to turn these same lights off once the room is empty.

Home automation systems can also be used to control the various security components that might be installed within a property. With these systems, motion detectors are a vital component and can be used to control any number of features. Security cameras, for instance, can be turned on and off by a motion sensor, turning them on only when movement is detected. Similarly, perimeter lights can also be controlled in the same manner. Security systems can also be programmed to automatically contact the appropriate emergency services in the event of a fire or break-in.

Home automation systems are becoming an increasingly popular way to monitor the various functions of the average house. While the initial cost of these systems might seem to be excessive, over time they can actually save money on energy costs. They are also a great way to make everyday living a bit more convenient. Welcome to the future.
