Home automation systems have revolutionized they way in which the modern house operates. They are quickly growing in popularity because they offer a great deal of convenience (especially for those with very busy schedules) as well as the opportunity to help streamline the way a home uses its energy resources. They have, in fact, become so popular that many homebuilders across the country have begun to incorporate these systems as standard equipment on new homes. For many people, these systems have become indispensable.
Just a few short decades ago, the closest thing to automation that most homeowners enjoyed was an electric garage door opener, or a remote control for their television. Most every other common home function, such as lights, yard irrigation, security, and entertainment had to be monitored and controlled manually. This meant that time and effort were required in order to maintain a properly functioning home, but this is no longer the case.
Home automation systems can be purchased for individual home functions, or can be integrated into a single, comprehensive system. This allows homeowners to pick and choose what they want to be monitored automatically and what they want to do manually. Cost is often a factor as well, as fully integrated systems are typically much more expensive than some of the individual features. Furthermore, many single-function systems can be easily installed without the need for a professional; which can be a real plus for the average homeowner on a budget.
As previously mentioned, fully integrated systems are common on many of today’s newer homes. These systems present a number of convenient features that were the stuff of fantasy and science fiction just a few decades ago. Fully automated environmental controls, interior and exterior lighting, landscape maintenance, and security systems are all commonly controlled by a central processing unit that can be easily programmed according to the needs of the individual home. And what’s even more impressive is that these modern automation systems can often be monitored and reprogrammed over the Internet, allowing homeowners to control the various aspects of their home from virtually anywhere.
However, this is not to say that an older home cannot benefit from modern technology. Many older homes are being retrofitted with a variety of home automation systems, and with great success. For instance, in most older homes the environmental controls are operated by manually adjusting the thermostat whenever the weather changes; but with an updated control unit these environmental operations can instead change automatically whenever it is required. Similarly, new lighting controls can be added giving the homeowner the option to program the interior lights to increase or decrease depending on the amount of available natural lighting. Motion detectors can also be incorporated in order to turn lights on whenever someone walks into a room, and turn them out again when the room is empty. Motion sensors can also be used to turn security cameras on when movement is detected, thereby saving not only electricity, but also valuable recording space on a computer hard drive.
