Welcome to the home of tomorrow, today. There was a time when ideas such as automated lighting, environmental controls, and other common functions of the home were the stuff of science fiction, but today home automation systems are becoming commonplace. From simple systems that control a few functions to complete systems that can control virtually every aspect of the home, modern technology is making them more affordable than ever before and creating a high demand. And while these systems may not include the robot servants and talking central computer that have been depicted in books and movies, they are nevertheless a real convenience for the average homeowner.
Advancedhomes.net is one of the web’s leading sources of information about the latest in today’s smart homes. We believe that automation can be not only a convenience, but also a great way to help save the average homeowner a bit of money as well. We have therefore designed our website as a research tool for those that are interested in learning more about the world of home automation and how it can be applied to their homes. We do our best to provide the most up to date information available and to do so in as unbiased a manner as possible. We do not endorse any particular company or manufacturer but instead invite people to decide for themselves what’s best for their particular situation.
Automation systems are becoming a popular component of the modern home. Although it is still a young and developing industry, it is making great strides and as the technology improves the demand for these systems is only expected to increase. However, it is important for consumers to understand just what an automated system actually is versus what we wish it were. The term “automated” is referring to the central computer system that is used to control varying home functions. Systems such as lighting, security, and environmental controls used to be controlled individually. Light switches activated the lights. Thermostats were manually adjusted according to the outside temperature.
These independent systems can now be easily controlled through one overarching home automation system. Lights, for example, can be programmed to gradually increase in luminosity as the sun begins to set as well as be programmed to automatically turn off at a designated time. Furthermore, motion detectors can be employed to turn on the lights whenever someone enters the room and turn off again once the room is empty. Inside environmental controls can be programmed to maintain a predetermined temperature automatically, regardless of the temperature outside. Likewise, security systems can also be automated, with the computer turning them on or off depending on the time of day or when motion is detected on the property.
While such rudimentary systems such as lighting and heating/cooling functions might seem like a far cry from the type of home automation we were promised in the movies and on television, it is a vast improvement on the independent systems of the past. And with technology advancing as quickly as it is, who knows what the future smart homes will include?
